Pedestrian safety by fencing off the perimeter
Generally a fence is a freestanding structure designed to restrict or prevent movement across a boundary. It is distinguished from a wall by the lightness of its construction.
While a perimeter fence is any kind of demarcation that marks off the boundary of the property by enclosing it in some way. There are several different types of perimeter fence. They may be used for privacy, safety or security, or as an element of landscaping.
Many construction sites are within close proximity to areas where the public operate, requiring rules and safety procedures which are equally as vital as for the construction workers on site. Before any work commences site inspections must be conducted by trained workers.
This is important because many accidents, fatalities and at worst death happen inside and outside the construction site each year. These incidents could have been avoided through proper safety application and awareness of on-site safety procedures.
As for a construction site safety is the main concern. Construction sites require a precise amount of care and vigilance from workers and pedestrian in terms of health and safety. Fencing off a construction site is vital to public safety, and keeping all work inside the perimeter is equally as important.
If hazards are kept inside a fenced location, pedestrians may remain safe. When transferring and lifting heavy materials to deposit on the site, the cranes should not move the material over any space that is not blocked off.
If movement of load will be required regularly the vicinity should be blocked to the public. In case anything falls from the crane no third party will be injured and accidents will be avoided.
Strong consideration should be given to closing off one lane of the street to traffic if pedestrians need to be diverted off of the sidewalk at a site location. This permits the outside curb lane for motorists to be used as the exchange pedestrian circulation route.
It is easier and quicker for vehicles to find an alternate route than pedestrian’s especially those with vision, cognitive, or mobility impairments. Therefore people you pass by should be informed through signs.
Construction contractors should also ensure that supervisors, contractors, and workers at the site are sensitized to the potential pedestrian conflicts that may occur.
In this way, they can be alert to changing hazards and conditions that might impact pedestrian safety and provide any assistance that pedestrian may require.
